The 2017 British National Championships: The Scottish Connection

Scotland was well represented again this year at the British Nationals with 22 Scottish owned horses forward for classes over the three days, from 27 to 29 July 2017 at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern.

The Three Counties is a beautiful showground set in the heart of rural England and surrounded by the stunning Malvern Hills. The showground is split into three rings for showing – the main The Arabian Magazine Ring for the ECAHO purebred in-hand classes, the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) ridden classes, and the championships, including the ridden; the Birkrigg Park Ridden Ring; and the Equi-Prestige In-hand Ring. There were further rings for showjumping and dressage behind the main showing rings. The trademark white fencing surrounds the rings and the setting made for beautiful photographs.

The weather was very mixed over the three days, with bursts of glorious sunshine mingled with heavy downpours and ‘dreich spells’ – a good Scottish word for wet and dull. We certainly experienced four seasons over the course of the show.

The trademark friendly atmosphere and camp spirit was back again. Horses were housed next to tents, lorries, caravan and motorhomes giving a very special intimate feeling to the area. Old acquaintances were reconnected, new friends were made and some parties went on until the early hours!

As well as those with horses competing at the show, the Scottish Contingent’s faithful connections were out in force to support their friends in the rings, having made the long journey themselves to enjoy a leisurely show without the stress of having horses to prepare. Those who couldn’t make the journey were using to internet to keep in touch, as spectators posted social media updates to broadcast results and also some ‘live streaming’ of classes for the internet surfers to enjoy.

A special mention must go to Scottish Arab Horse Group’s Chairman Susan Kilgour, who was training for her AHS Steward’s licence at the show – talk about a baptism of fire! Five rings over three days for a probationer steward is no mean feat! But congratulations to Susan who survived the show and now waits with anticipation for the outcome. Good luck!

It was definitely worth the long journey and I’m sure many of us will make the trip again. Well done to the Arab Horse Society Organising Committee, stewards and helpers for their hard work, dedication and commitment in making sure the show ran like clockwork. What a show to have to organise, I don’t envy them!
