Djammal 1986 – 2016

We are very saddened to have to announce the news that the amazing fairytale stallion, Djammal, passed away on Monday 5 September. Sired by Carmargue (White Lightning x Velvet Shadow by Bey Shadow) and out of Bint Jamiellah (Makor x Aphrodite by Mameluck), Djammal celebrated his 30th birthday this year.

For most of his life, Djammal has been owned by Hugh and Michelle Segre of Phoenix Arabians. Michelle explains: “We were looking for a stallion for our mare Ana Gayeh (Kadishka x Burstow Park Zirconia by Donax) and when Djammal came into the ring at a group show, he took our breath away. Every single day, for the rest of his life, Djammal continued to take our breath away.

“His show-ring achievements are extensive, including a fourth in Paris, and he claimed a title at the British National Championships when he was 23 years young! His sons, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren have won National and International titles, both in-hand and under-saddle, notably Horse of the Year Show Champion Jammilah (ex Samaseel by Samson out of Nanak) and Ibn Djammal (ex Pjatakova by Balaton out of Popova), British National and European Ridden Champion in 2012.

“Our Djammal daughters and grand daughters are prized broodmares, consistently producing champion after champion from a variety of different stallions. But Djammal was about so much more than that – he was a true gentleman and great character. Both Hugh and I feel so empty without him.

“We truly owe everything to Djammal. He will always be at the heart of Phoenix Arabians, and our lives will never be the same without him to call to us every morning from his prime position in the very first stable on the yard. Run free, our darling friend.”
