Book review: Let’s Ride – The Personal Memoirs of a Legendary Horsewoman by Sheila Varian

Let’s Ride – The Personal Memoirs of a Legendary Horsewoman by Sheila Varian

Published at the end of 2018 is a beautiful volume of recollections and memoirs by the late, great Sheila Varian. One of the leading ladies in the world of the Arabian horse, Let’s Ride is a collection of short essays, covering Sheila’s early life with horses through to the greats in her life – Bay-Abi (Errabi x Angyl) and Farlotta (Lotnik x Farza). The book also contains some of Sheila’s poetry, and her speech following her induction into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame.

Sheila’s warm personality shines through these pages, and you can hear her voice as you turn the pages of this lovely book. My favourite chapter is on Bay-Abi winning the US Nationals, a story I first heard Sheila tell over 10 years ago and one that has always stayed with me. The book is worth having, just for this incredible moment alone.

Whether you knew Sheila or not, Let’s Ride is a lovely book. It shares the dreams of one young girl, who grew into a woman of great vision and determination, and how, while she reached her goals, she always strived for more.

You can buy Let’s Ride – The Personal Memoirs of a Legendary Horsewoman from The Arabian Magazine Shop, priced £15 (excl. p+p). Order your copy today at www.thearabianmagazineshop.com or call during office hours to place your order.
