The Australasian Arabian Breeders Coalition (AABC) is dedicated to promoting the breeding and preservation of purebred Arabian horses across the continent. Uniting passionate breeders from Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, the Coalition fosters collaboration, education, and innovation to ensure the Arabian horse thrives in the region.

Through incentives, educational initiatives, and global promotion, the Coalition provides invaluable resources to breeders while enhancing the breed’s profile in the international equine industry. Events, fundraising efforts, and strategic partnerships further support the responsible breeding, evaluation, and exhibition of these iconic horses.

At its core, the Coalition embodies a shared commitment: breeders supporting breeders, working together to uphold the Arabian horse’s legacy as Australasia’s premier equine breed.

Australasian Arabian International Championships: a show like no other
The Australasian Arabian International Championships, held on 31 January to 2 February at the breathtaking Willinga Park, delivered on its promise to be a world-class Arabian horse event. Designed to emulate the premier shows in North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East, the International Championships brought together exceptional horses, elite competitors, and a truly international atmosphere.

With renowned judges, the prestigious international scoring system, and a world-class venue, the competition set a new benchmark for Arabian horse events in the region. But this show was more than just about the competition – it was an experience. Attendees embraced the opportunity to combine their passion for Arabian horses with a coastal getaway, making the most of Willinga Park’s spectacular location between Batemans Bay and Jervis Bay.

Unlike traditional jam-packed schedules, this event allowed time to savour the horses, the camaraderie, and the social gatherings woven into the programme. Whether competing or spectating, everyone who attended agreed that the third Australasian Arabian International Championships were, once again, a resounding success. Many extended their stay, taking in the pristine beaches, lush national parks, and relaxed coastal lifestyle.

For those who missed it, one thing is certain – this extraordinary event continues to set a new standard, and anticipation is already building for the next edition.

A unique perspective: behind the scenes at the AABC International Championships
This year, I had the privilege of attending the AABC International Championships in multiple roles – as a council member, a breeder and competitor, and as one of the official photographers. Experiencing the event from these different perspectives gave me a deep appreciation for the dedication, passion, and meticulous organisation that goes into making this show a success.

As a council member of the AABC, I have witnessed firsthand the months of preparation required to bring this world-class event to life. Under the expert direction of Scott Benjamin, and with the unwavering support of a committed team, the International Championships came together seamlessly, setting a new standard for Arabian horse shows in our region.

The AABC International Championships is more than just a competition. It is a celebration of the Arabian horse and the passionate community that surrounds it. Whether in the show-ring, behind the lens, or working behind the scenes, it was an honour to be part of an event that showcased the very best of our breed.

For those who attended, competed, or supported from afar, this show was a testament to the strength and dedication of our Arabian horse community.

The Annual Stallion Service Auction continues to play a vital role in supporting Australian breeders, creating exciting new breeding opportunities, and directly contributing to the success of the AABC International Championships. Beyond the competition, the Championships would not be complete without the much-anticipated social events, which bring together breeders, competitors, and enthusiasts in an atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration. The welcome BBQ set the tone for the weekend, offering a relaxed setting to reconnect with friends and fellow breeders. The pizza night and arena pack-up was another highlight, where teamwork and laughter turned the task of clearing the arena into an enjoyable community effort.

The pinnacle of the weekend was undoubtedly the awards dinner, a heartfelt evening that honoured the achievements of the show and, more importantly, celebrated the legacy of past and present breeders and the individuals who have shaped and continue to shape the Arabian horse industry in Australia and New Zealand. It was a privilege to welcome Lifetime Achievement for Excellence in Arabian Horse Breeding recipients James and Mary Triggs of Aloha Stud (New South Wales), Allan and Cheryl Skinner of El Kheir Arabians (New Zealand) and the Sharman Family of Jangharm Arabians (Queensland), as well as Arabian Ambassador Award winner Kay Edward of Shane Edward Arabians (Victoria) as the most recent immensely well-deserving inductees into the Australasian Arabian Breeders Hall of Fame. They all join an elite group of breeders and professionals from across Australasia whose invaluable contributions to the Arabian horse both at home and abroad have not only made a profound difference in the lives of countless others, but have also ensured the breed continues to thrive across disciplines, cultures and international boundaries.

Emirates Arabian Horse Global Cup returns bigger than ever
The Emirates Arabian Horse Global Cup (EAHGC-AC) made a triumphant return to the AABC International Championships, offering the most lucrative prize money for Arabian horses in Australasia. The 2025 edition saw significant enhancements, reflecting the growing prestige of the competition.

In response to the overwhelmingly positive reception of the Global Cup worldwide, the programme expanded to include two qualifying divisions for yearlings, along with a dedicated Yearling Championship. With this expansion, sixty horses became eligible for prize money across twelve qualifying classes, while eighteen breeding exhibits were recognized as medal winners in the six championship finals. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals were awarded to yearlings, juniors, and seniors across both female and male categories.

One of the most exciting developments was the increase in prize money, rising from 5000 AED to 8000 AED per placing. This meant that sixty horses shared a total prize pool of 480,000 AED, equating to more than A$210,000, the largest prize purse ever offered to Arabian breeders and owners in Australia and New Zealand.

One of the standout aspects of the AABC International Championships was the commitment to horse welfare, which remained a top priority throughout the event. Accompanying the Disciplinary Committee on their welfare checks was a pleasure, as they were thoroughly impressed by how calm, well-cared-for, and well-behaved the horses were. Microchip scanning was effortlessly completed in the stables, some without halters, a true testament to the trust and handling of these magnificent horses.

The show schedule was carefully designed to prioritise the well-being of the horses, with only one qualifying performance needed on Friday for horses competing in both the Emirates Arabian Horse Global Cup Finals and the AABC International Championships. Each competitor was judged under two separate panels, using two distinct scorecards, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation while minimising unnecessary exertion for the horses.

A breeder perspective: the ultimate evaluation
As both a breeder and owner, having horses in the competition, expertly presented by Re-Ality Arabians, as well as watching horses I had bred compete under their new owners, gave me a unique and deeply rewarding perspective on the AABC International Championships.

There is nothing quite like seeing the horses you have bred compete against the best Arabian horses in Australia, analysing how they measure up, and using that insight to refine future breeding decisions. This show offered an invaluable opportunity to study the bloodlines of winning horses, observe them in the flesh, and assess how different breeding programmes are shaping the Arabian breed in Australasia.

Beyond the accolades and prize money, one of the greatest benefits for breeders at this event, was the comprehensive evaluation provided through the two separate scorecards. These detailed assessments, showing exactly how each judge placed the horse and highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement, will be analysed and discussed for months to come. This level of thorough feedback is simply unmatched at any other show in Australia, making the AABC International Championships an essential event for any serious breeder.

From showcasing breeding programmes to refining future plans, this event was more than just a competition – it was a masterclass in Arabian horse breeding and evaluation.

Through the lens: capturing the magic
As a photographer, this event was nothing short of spectacular. Willinga Park is unmatched in its sheer beauty, from breathtaking sculpture gardens and immaculately maintained arenas to the pristine beaches where sunrise photoshoots created unforgettable moments.

Visitors were mesmerised by the setting, and every corner of the venue provided a picture-perfect backdrop for showcasing the Arabian horse in all its glory. The combination of world-class competition and stunning surroundings made this the ultimate Arabian show in Australia, where memories were not just made – they were beautifully captured, to be cherished for years to come.
